United States Geological Survey Geography Discipline

LRS - Science Fair

The USGS Geography Discipline Land Remote Sensing (LRS) Program is hosting the 4th Annual Land Remote Sensing Science Symposium titled "Meeting Tomorrows Challenges Today" on March 11 - 12, 2008, in the USGS Flagstaff facility located at 2255 N. Gemini Drive. A geology field trip to the Grand Canyon is available for March 14th.

The purpose of the conference is to showcase all of the research activities within the USGS LRS Program. The event will highlight current and potential remote sensing science and activities in both commercial and classified arenas.

Symposium Agenda -- ABSTRACT DEADLINE 2/15/08

The purpose of the conference is to showcase remote sensing research activities being conducted across the USGS. The three day event will feature presentations highlighting particular research applications in relationship to the six strategic directions as outlined in the USGS strategic science plan: Facing Tomorrows Challenges: USGS Science in the Coming Decade on the first day and research focused on LRS Program strategic areas on the second day. A poster session will be held illustrating additional remote sensing research activities being conducted primarily by the LRS Program (Poster Guidelines).

The planning committee is currently requesting individuals from across the Bureau to give oral presentations on their remote sensing activities and how those activities help address the societal issues as outlined in the six strategic science directions of the USGS strategic science plan.

Requested symposium donations: $20.00 per person muffins, doughnuts, coffee, tea, soft drinks during symposium and refreshments provided during poster session Day 1. $10.00 per person for lunch during field trip to Grand Canyon (only for those going on the field trip).

Likely Flagstaff Weather: Warm during the day, high 40's to high 50's during the day (but can be colder). Cold at night. Would recommend a jacket, particulary for those going on the field trip. People should keep in mind the elevation is 7000 feet and dress accordingly (very similar to Denver weather).

Conference Registration is no longer open since maximum attendance has been achieved.
